Until Blanche understood the impeachment charges and repercussions, we did not comment. It’s now as clear as mud. Just kidding. It’s complicated and a long-drawn out ‘geshichte’ – story.
What is impeachment: …Impeachment is a political process, not a criminal one. …To impeach, in our context, means to bring charges in Congress that will form the basis for a trial…. …The US constitution states a president “shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes or misdemeanours”.
What is the process? …It happens in two stages. Proceedings have to be started by the House of Representatives. …A vote to impeach only needs a simple majority to pass and if it does, the process then moves to the Senate where a trial is held.
Now the juicy stuff: …If insufficient evidence of wrongdoing is found, Trump remains in office. …If sufficient evidence of wrongdoing is found, the House votes on impeachment. It now gets a bit complicated: …If less than a majority support impeachment, Trump remains in office. …If 51% support impeachment, Trump is impeachment and a trial begins in the Senate.
After the trial, the Senate votes on whether to convict the President. …If less than two-thirds – 51% of the Senate vote to convict, Trump remains in office. …If more than two-thirds – 67% – vote to convict, Trump is removed from office and the Vice-President takes over.
Two Kickers: …A two-thirds vote is necessary for a president’s removal and this milestone has never been reached in US history. …Note that the Senate is currently controlled by the Republican Party.
The Charges: #1. Abuse of power and what it means: Trump allegedly used the power of the presidency for his own benefit. Specifically the allegation that he pressured Ukraine to announce political investigations into former vice president Joe Biden and a conspiracy theory that Democrats and Ukraine interfered in the 2016 election, downplaying Russia’s broad involvement.
Charge #2: Obstruction of Congress Trump blocked Congress’s investigation into his alleged wrongdoing. A few weeks into the impeachment inquiry, the White House said it wouldn’t cooperate with the inquiry.
The House is controlled by the Democrats, the Senate, where the vote to impeach is taken, by the Republicans. Shiff, Nadler and Pelosi are going through this exercise at literally break-neck speed. Trump wants a long, drawn-out trial in the Senate.
Here’s the reason for the rush: The democrats are trying to elect a new leader and the first caucuses in Iowa are in February. Senators who should be campaigning will be held hostage at a long trial and not be able to campaign. Ergo, the race is on. Frankly, it’s disgusting.
Here’s something mighty strange. It took a few clicks to find any information about the newly signed North American Trade agreement. Is no one happy? Is this so boring that no one cares? Are we waiting for the other shoe to drop? Bizarre.
There’s a really infuriating commercial playing on English radio stations. A kid invites her friend to stay for supper. The father tells the kid to ask her mother. The father’s kid says she doesn’t have a mother, she has two fathers. The father then says go ask one of your fathers. The end of the commercial says that Quebec is inclusive. Really?
This commercial is going to make Morris forget that because he wears a kippah he can’t get a government job in Quebec? Or that Mohammed’s wife can’t teach because she wears a hijab? This is an inclusive province?
The Quebec government must think we all have pea-brains. Guess what? We don’t. Some people actually have a brain that functions. Just saying.
Well, well, well. It seems the uber self-righteous, very ‘pure’, save-the-world-climate-whales-trees Elizabeth aka Pochahantas Warren was a republican for most of her adult life. Trying to pretend that you are something you are not doesn’t go over well in this day and age because you will be found out. Trying to hide it or pretend it never happened is even worse.
Warren worked as a corporate lawyer (what??)for Dupont and other companies, pretended to be a Native American to get a discount in university (ergo her nickname) and lied when she said her kids went to a public school when in fact they went to a private school. She’s also a multi-millionaire, trying to make people think she has no money.
Giving another cent to further her campaign is throwing your money down an endless drain. In the Cherokee language they have no word for goodbye. Instead they say: Do-nv-da-go-hv-i – till we meet again. No one is going to want to meet Warren again for a very long time. Another one bites the dust. Remember Meghan Rapinoe? She’s the US women’s soccer team super-star who, after winning the championship, refused to hold her hand over her heart as a “f*** you” to “sexist,” “racist,” and “small-minded” President Donald Trump.
Her reward for dumping on her country? She was named Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the year. Anyone else tossing their cookies?
We’ll talk…
